Tralee sailing in right direction with return of Swansea-Cork Ferry

TOURISM providers in Tralee have said they are expecting an increase in visitors to the town next year following the announcement that the Swansea-Cork Ferry service will return in the spring of 2010.

The Chairman of Holiday Tralee, Pádraig McGillicuddy, welcomed the return of the service describing it as being “vital to the future of tourism in the South West of Ireland” because it will offer an additional access route to the Cork/Kerry Region.

“This is the only ferry service from Britain servicing the South West and it is a vital element of access to the counties of Cork and Kerry,” he said.

The return of the ferry service became possible when the West Cork Tourism Co-Operative Society Limited announced that the cruiseferry, the Julia, had been purchased for €7.8 million.

The Julia, which will operate under the Fastnet Line brand, will arrive in Cork in the coming weeks to proclaim the dawn of a new era for the South West region. Fastnet Line Limited is a 100% wholly owned subsidiary of West Cork Tourism Co-Op.

The service on the Cork to Swansea route will begin in March 2010 and expects to enjoy strong demand from both tourist and freight customers. Fastnet Line believes that it will contribute greatly to the development and promotion of tourism in Cork, Kerry and surrounding areas, bringing thousands of tourists directly to the region annually, and will also contribute to the development of Irish tourism into Wales.
