| THE 2010 Rose of Tralee, Clare Kambamettu, will receive a hero’s welcome this weekend not seen since the Kildare football team returned home with Sam Maguire 82 years ago. In 1928 Kildare won the All-Ireland for the second year running while Clare Kambamettu from Athy has won the Rose of Tralee representing London a year after fellow Athy native Charmaine Kenny, also representing London, was crowned the 2009 Rose of Tralee. Next Saturday (18th September) Athy Town Council will host a major celebration of Clare’s success in Tralee last month with a Civic Reception and party to honour the 26-year-old’s achievement. Cllr James Mahon, the Cathaoirleach of Athy Town Council, said: “This is the highest honour we can bestow on any citizen and we are proud to welcome Clare home to Athy as the 2010 Rose of Tralee. She has done her family and Centre proud and we are confident that she will be a marvellous ambassador for Athy, Tralee, London and Ireland over the next 12 months, just as Charmaine Kenny was last year.” In a fitting acknowledgement of Clare’s Indian heritage, the Indian Ambassador to Ireland, His Excellency PS Raghavan will be among the guests of honour at Saturday’s Civic Reception. The National and International Co-ordinator for the Rose of Tralee International Festival, Steve Cronly will be joined by the current Kildare Rose Edel Kearney, the Mayor of Tralee Cllr Arthur Spring along with the 2009 Rose and Athy-native Charmaine Kenny. Members of the local community in Athy are planning to stage further celebrations over the coming weeks to mark Clare’s selection as the 2010 Rose of Tralee. Clare Kambamettu is due to return to Tralee at the end of the month for the first time since becoming the 2010 Rose of Tralee. During her visit she will call to a number of local schools in the area.
