DEFENDING champions, Kerins O’Rahillys will be among the 16 teams battling it out to win the 2010 Rose Cup on Saturday 21st August at two Tralee GAA venues: Kerins O’Rahillys and Na Gaeil.

Only in its second year this competition has already become a prestigious event on the GAA Juvenile calendar in Kerry. Jointly run by Coiste Trá Lí and the Rose of Tralee International Festival it will be proudly sponsored once again by Oaklands Daybreak, Listowel Road, Tralee.

Announcing details of this year’s Rose Cup, the Communications Manager of the Rose of Tralee International Festival, John Drummey, said: “This competition has the potential to bring an extra 1100 people to Tralee. This is in line with what the Rose Cup was designed to do - use Gaelic Football as a means of bringing large crowds to Tralee to enjoy the Rose of Tralee International Festival and generate much needed revenue for the local businesses. We are delighted to announce that the competition has doubled with 16 teams from Kerry, Limerick and Cork due to take part. Everyone on every team is invited to join in the celebrations of the Rose of Tralee Parade through the streets of Tralee later in the evening.”

The competitions will consist of 2 Groups of 4 in each venue. Each team will play 3 games of 20 minutes and the first placed team in Group A & B in each venue will play each other in the Rose Cup Semi-final. The winners from each the venues will then play in the Rose Cup Final to be held at the Kerins O’Rahillys venue.

The 2nd placed teams in Group A & B in each venue will play each other in the Rose Shield Semi-final and the winners from each of the venues will then play in the Rose Plate Final which will be held in the Na Gaeil venue.

The 2009 Rose of Tralee, Charmaine Kenny, will present the Rose Cup and Rose Shield to the winning captains on the Ashe Stage on Denny Street at the end of the Rose of Tralee Parade on Saturday 21st August in front of a crowd of around 15,000 people.

“Once again a special word of thanks must be extended to everyone in Coiste Trá Lí who give their time to organise this event. The sponsorship from Oaklands Daybreak is invaluable when meeting the costs of running such an event while the continued support of Lee Strand in ensuring that the players are nourished throughout the day is very welcome. We are also lucky to have a shop such as Trophyworld on our doorstep to provide such a large number of souvenir medals for the players,” said John Drummey.

The 2010 Rose Cup will take place at Kerins O’Rahillys and Na Gaeil GAA grounds from 10.15am on Saturday 21st August. Some of this year’s Roses will visit the venues and all teams and their families are encouraged to stay in Tralee for the day to soak up the Festival atmosphere.
