Reduction in Kerry-Dublin service by Ryanair a “set-back” to local economy
PDF Print

KERRY Airport management have expressed concern at the recent announcement by Ryanair of the reduction in flights on the Kerry-Dublin service as supported under the PSO programme. The airport is particularly concerned that this step is a major set-back to the local economy.

The provision and continuance of the current level of service is of utmost importance to the local industry and tourist interests and the value to the county is well known and understood by all who have used these services over the past 8 years.

It is regrettable that Ryanair, who are contracted until July 2011, have now decided to break the terms of their PSO contract. It should be understood that the Kerry Airport itself is not a party within the PSO contract which is between Ryanair and the Department of Transport to provide 3 daily return flights between Kerry and Dublin.

Basil Sheerin of Kerry Airport said: “We, as an airport entity, are now entering a new situation and the various options presented to us now have to be considered and evaluated. We have had very little notice of this Ryanair decision and are not at this stage in a position to determine the consequences of same. The maintenance and continuance of the PSO aided service is of vital importance – whether it be with the current operator Ryanair or with an alternative airline.”

Kerry Airport is ideally located for anyone wishing to travel on business or pleasure with direct flights to seven destinations including: Dublin, London Stansted, London Luton, Frankfurt-Hahn, Dusseldorf-Weeze, Alicante & Faro with Ryanair and to Manchester with Aer Arann. Parking charges at Kerry Airport as they are cheaper than other airports. It only costs €35 to park a car at Kerry Airport for eight days compared to €49 for seven days in other airports and there are over 660 car park spaces available at Kerry Airport.
