MANAGEMENT at Kerry Airport have welcomed yesterday’s announcement by the Minister for Transport that the Government has agreed to support the continuation of the Public Service Obligation route between Kerry and Dublin.

The Chairman of Kerry Airport, Denis Cregan, said: “The Value for Money Review of Exchequer Expenditure on the Regional Airports Programme has recognised the crucial importance of maintaining the PSO aided service between Kerry & Dublin.  It is essential that the tendering process for the new PSO contract commences as a matter of urgency in the interest of job stability at Kerry Airport and in other sectors throughout the county.”

He expressed his sincere thanks to the nine Kerry-based Oireachtas members, in particular Deputies John O’Donoghue and Jimmy Deenihan, who strenuously argued in favour retaining the PSO route.

Mr Cregan said that staff and management are maintaining a regular dialogue in relation to the recently announced redundancies which were necessary at the airport following the reduction in passenger numbers on the Dublin route.

“We remain optimistic that this will be a short-term set-back for the airport and that we will again be in a position to provide up to 3 daily return flights between Kerry and Dublin which is what both the tourist business interest of the county need and require,” he said.

Denis Cregan said that Kerry Airport itself is not a party within the PSO contract, in its current format, which until recently was between Ryanair and the Department of Transport to provide 3 daily return flights between Kerry and Dublin.

The Value for Money Report also indicated that Kerry Airport stands out from the other regional airports as having good air services connectivity in its own right. It outlined that Kerry has jet runway capacity, which means it can attract more airlines and serve more routes than the other regional airports.
